Introduction

Imagine a state with beautiful lakes, rivers,breathtaking Mountains. New York has it all. The general climate state in New York is considered humid continental. Winter temperatures can drop below freezing in both January and February. Meanwhile, summer-like conditions prevail from June to August throughout the entire state.

Basic Facts

        New York is a small state with a very large population. New York is located in the northeast region of the United States. The bordering states of New York are Vermont, Massachusetts, Connecticut, New Jersey, and  Pennsylvania. New York covers 54,556 square miles. Compared to other states, New York is ranked the 27th state in the size. The population of New York consists of 19,378,102 people. The capital of New York is Albany. Albany is located in the northeastern area of the state. A total of 97,856 people live in Albany. Two other major cities are New York City and Buffalo. New York City is located in the southwest region and Buffalo is located in the western region of the state. The population of New York City is 8,175,133, and 261,310 people live in Buffalo.

New York  Land Regions 

 

        New York has eight very different land regions. The first land region is the Atlantic Coastal Plain; it stretches along the Atlantic Ocean from Massachusetts to southern tip of Florida. There are beautiful summer resort areas found within this region. Fishing is a very important income for the people that live on the Atlantic Coastal plain.

        New york’s second land region is The New England Upland which extends along lower half of New York's eastern border. This region is also the heart of New York City located on Manhattan Island.  The New England Upland has a variety of hills and low mountains.

        The third land region of New York is The Hudson Mohawk Lowland. A very interesting site in this region is Stark’s Knob which is located on the Taconic (a massive volcanic rock).  The Hudson Mohawk Lowland makes an upside down L that is located in this region. The Shawangunk Mountains is a very big mountain range, that is located in this region

        The Adirondack Upland is fourth land region in New York The Adirondack Upland has 2,000 mountain  peaks; it also it has 2,200 lake. The Adirondack mountains are only mountains in eastern United States that aren’t part of Appalachian chain.

        New York’s fifth land region is the St. Lawrence Lowland. This region is the northernmost region in New York bordering the st. lawrence river. It is known for the dairy farms, gavel, crushing stone, mining. Nearly flat, and gently rolling.

        The sixth land region is the Tug Hill Plateau. It is known for its SNOW; you heard it snow! Lots and lots of snow. It is actually snowiest place east of rocky mountains. Snow comes down in feet and not in inches. The harsh climate and thin soils restrict farming and settlement.

      New York’s seventh land region is the Appalachian Plateau. This region is located south of Erie Ontario Lowland, and it is part of Appalachian Mountains. Some of the most stunning scenery in New York can be found here.

     The eighth land region of New York is The Erie Ontario Lowland being home to the Niagara Falls. This region lies on border New York and Canada. The Erie Ontario Lowland has a lot of rolling hills.

New York's average in January temperature ranges from 14°F  to 31°F. And in July temperatures range from 65°F to 73°F.

New York's  Landforms

 The Highest elevation in New York is Mount Marcy at 5,344 feet (1,629m) Mount Marcy is located northeast of New York City in the Appalachian mountains.  Mount Marcy is covered with snow at the top. A lot of people come from all around to tour the beautiful mountains and to see breathtaking sights that will last a lifetime.

Some of the major mountain ranges. in New York are the Appalachian Mountain, the Adirondack Mountains.

The largest rivers in New York are the Niagara River, the Hudson River, the St. Lawrence river, and the Genesee River.  The Hudson River is located south of Lake Tear. The St. Lawrence runs on the state’s northern border. The Genesee River run through Pennsylvania and New York. Stretching between Canada and New York, the Niagara River, also runs by Niagara falls.

Some of the major lakes in New York are: Lake Champlain, Lake George, and Lake Oneida. Lake Oneida is 193 miles long. lake George has great touring sites and campsites. When the lake freezes people can play hockey. Lake Champlain is 107 miles long. With its northern tip extending into Quebec and Lake Champlain is located on the border between New York and Vermont. Lake Oneida is New York's longest lake! Lake Champlain flows into the Niagara falls as well as Lake George!  The only ocean that borders New York is the Atlantic Ocean.

One of the most famous waterfalls known in the nation is the Niagra Falls.  The Niagara Falls flow into Canada. Niagara river also connects to two other rivers. All of these places are located in the Northeast region of the state.

Conclusion

New York is filled with breathtaking mountains, beautiful lakes, and long flowing rivers. New York’s climate changes every season. Each of the eight region have unique landforms.
